Community Recycling & Shredding Event, April 13

The following services will be provided on April 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Lawton Center Parking Lot

• Shred Your Documents: Shred Ace will shred documents. Staples and paper clips are okay. No batteries, binders, or books.
• Recycle Clothing and Home Goods: The Interfaith Works Clothing Center will collect clothing and home goods to donate to low-income County residents. Please put items in secured plastic bags.
• Recycle Electronic Equipment: SAMR will collect electronic equipment -- anything with a plug or a battery -- for recycling.
• Donate Sports Equipment: Leveling the Playing Field (LPF) will collect used and excess sporting equipment to donate to programs and schools serving low-income communities. 
• Donate Books: The Town will collect books for Friends of the Library, Montgomery County (FOLMC). Please bring clean, gently used books in a box or bag.  No magazines or encyclopedias.
• Exchange Light Bulbs: Montgomery County will exchange light bulbs of any type for 3 new LED bulbs.

Note: A Wider Circle’s furniture and household items collection will not be available at this event.

Plastic Film Recycling Campaign

The Garden Club of Chevy Chase is undertaking a plastic film recycling campaign. Did you know you can recycle so much more than just grocery store plastic bags? Below is a list of plastic that IS ACTUALLY recycled by the NexTrex Company -- they create eco-friendly outdoor products from recycled plastic products. These are items you might take to Giant or Safeway but can drop off on Saturday, April 13 from 10  a.m. to 2 p.m. at a location closer than the stores you frequent. Stop by the Lawton Center to drop off any of these items and find out more about the NexTrex Recycling Challenge.

World of Beer Happy Hour, April 19

The Town’s Community Relations Committee is hosting a happy hour event on Friday, April 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at World of Beer. Come by to meet other Town residents and enjoy a fun evening out. Complimentary appetizers while supplies last. The event is open to all. Cheers!

Vote on the Most Important Health Needs in Montgomery County!

Your participation in the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) Information Sessions to Prioritize Significant Health Needs is essential to making this step in the Community Health Improvement Process a success. At these in-person events, participants will attend a brief presentation that provides an overview of the County's significant health needs, the County's Department of Health and Human Services staff will answer questions and provide any clarification on the CHNA's key findings, and then community members will prioritize the significant health needs that were identified in the CHNA.

Registration for in-person sessions opened April 3, 2024, and will close for each event two days before each session. The online surveys will close at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

There are two ways to register for an in-person session:

Does Your Home Project Need a Permit?

As a reminder, many home improvement projects need a permit from the Town based on ordinances that have been established to promote safety, aesthetics, and the preservation of our community's character. Many of these projects also require a permit from Montgomery County.

Among other improvements, a Town permit is required If you plan to construct a building or addition, remove a tree, install a fence or retaining wall, address water drainage, install a pool, replace a driveway, or place a dumpster or storage unit. When in doubt, please contact the Town office at 301-654-7144 or townoffice@townofchevychase.org.

Report Crimes & Incidents to MCPD and Town

In an emergency, please call 911. Please report all crimes, incidents (including non-emergency vehicle accidents), or suspicious activity to MCPD’s non-emergency line at 301-279-8000. See MCPD’s guidance on when to call the non-emergency line. Both 911 and the non-emergency line are equipped for callers with hearing and/or speech impairments.  

Additionally, please report all crimes, incidents, and suspicious activity to the Town Office so that we can notify our contracted police officers and work with the 2nd District to respond accordingly.

Lock Your Cars
We want to remind residents to ensure that your cars are locked at all times. Also, please do not leave house or car keys, or any valuable items, in your vehicles. If you observe any suspicious activity, please report it to the police immediately at 911.  Report any crimes that have already occurred to the police at 301-279-8000. 

Mail Theft & Check Washing
We also want to remind residents of ongoing theft of mail from U.S Postal Service mailboxes. Montgomery County has seen a rise in cases that can also include check washing. More information on check washing and how to protect yourself from check washing is available here. Those who believe their mail was stolen should report it immediately by submitting an online complaint here or by calling USPIS at 877-876-2455. If you observe any suspicious activity, please report it to the police immediately at 911. Report any crimes that have already occurred to the police at 301-279-8000.

CPR Basics and Fire Safety Training with MCFRS
Thursday, April 25, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Chevy Chase Village Hall

Join Chevy Chase At Home to learn the basics of CPR, along with helpful fire prevention home safety tips, from members of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Hands-Only CPR: In a brief period of time, anyone can learn the steps of Hands-Only CPR. Join us on April 25 when Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Lt. Irvin Smith demonstrates and teaches the simple, yet important lifesaving skills that anyone can do. There is no more valuable time spent. We can't wait to see you there!

Fire and Carbon Monoxide Safety in Your Home: Does your home safety equipment need a checkup? You probably get a regular checkup for your health from a healthcare provider. Your home deserves the same care and attention. You might be able to check (and perhaps correct) some things in your home, but what do you really know about your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms? Please consider having a free Home Safety Check by a representative from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS). The typical Home Safety Check takes about an hour. A trained, experienced firefighter or fire safety educator will come to your home on an appointment basis and will check your existing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. If your alarms are missing or otherwise in need of replacement, we might be able to install new alarms at no cost. The typical Home Safety Check takes about an hour to complete. Please note, since we are firefighters and not electricians we are limited in what we can do if your home has hardwired alarms. Also, we cannot work on ceilings that are more than 9 feet high. But we can still come out anyway and assess and recommend corrective actions.

This event will take place at the Chevy Chase Village Hall, 5906 Connecticut Ave. Parking is available on neighboring streets. The event is free, but please register in advance. Please register by contacting the CC@H office at info@chevychaseathome.org or 301-657-3115.
