Climate Protection Committee

In early 2006 the Town of Chevy Chase passed the Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement.  The Climate Protection Committee (CPC) is working to help the Town meet it's obligation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 7% from 1990 levels by 2012.  The Chevy Chase Challenge is a climate action plan designed to help meet this obligation.  The Town Council adopted the plan at its December 10, 2008 meeting.
The Climate Protection Committee has sponsored many activities, speakers, and events for the Town, some of which include:
  • Step Up to the Challenge:  This month long effort by Town residents to walk more and drive less, concluded on April 19th with a fun-filled celebration in Elm Street Park.  Please click HERE to view the winners of the Challenge.  You can look at the final tally of steps taken by each contestant by clicking HERE.
  • Net Zero Energy Home Presentation: Town residents and architects Marcie Meditch and John Murphey presented their designs, materials, and systems of constructing zero energy homes so residents could learn how this may apply to their residences.  To view their PowerPoint, click HERE.
  • Climate Corps: The CPC is organizing a group of Town high school and college students who will provide energy conservation advice to Town homeowners during Summer 2009.  Call the Town office for more information or to set up a home checkup.  What exactly is the Climate Corps?  Click for homeowner information.

The Committee has spearheaded a program to distribute compact fluorescent light bulbs to Town residents, and encouraged the Town Council to purchase greenhouse gas offsets for the Town's street lights.

Show the world that Chevy Chase is taking action against global warming!  Get your free reusable grocery bag from the Town by signing the Climate Pledge.  Take the Climate Protection Pledge Here or call or stop by the office to get a paper copy of the pledge.  Take your Town pride to the grocery store!

MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of the Climate Protection Committee is to ensure that the Town take meaningful steps to mitigate global climate change, in compliance with the requirements of the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement.

The five steps in compliance include:
1.   Undertaking a greenhouse gas assessment
2.   Setting a goal for reducing greenhouse gas emissions that is consistent with the Kyoto Protocol.
3.   Preparing a climate action plan to achieve the goal
4.   Implementing the climate action plan
5.   Measuring impact of the action plan on greenhouse gas emissions.

The Climate Protection Committee receives guidance from and provides advice to the Town Council on how to comply with the U.S. Mayors' Agreement and works with volunteers and Town staff to implement relevant activities.
