KKK Hate Fliers - Town Council Response
Dear Residents,
As many of you may know, multiple residents in the Town have found hate fliers distributed in various locations around our town. These fliers were placed by a white supremacist hate group known as the Loyal White Knights of the KKK, which is the nation’s largest known KKK affiliate. See more about them here.
These fliers are contemptible, and those who distribute them traffic in the worst, most deplorable hate speech. We on the Town Council strongly condemn both their language and their intent to intimidate our residents by distributing them here. We will not be intimidated, and we are grateful to our residents who are currently speaking out, on the town neighbors list serve, in opposition and abhorrence to these fliers.
Since being alerted by diligent residents on Saturday morning about these fliers, the Town Council has fully engaged crucial law enforcement and public officials about them, including the County Executive, County Council Members, State’s Attorney’s office, County Police, and the District 18 State Delegation. We are also closely consulting with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), who tracks this hate group. It is our understanding from these engagements that similar fliers have also been distributed in Kemp Mill and Garrett Park, meaning that this is an ongoing affront to multiple neighboring communities in our county.
We want to assure you that Commander Sean Gagen, who oversees our district (2nd) for the Montgomery County Police Department, is taking an active role in monitoring this situation and is in touch with other relevant authorities to try to identify the source of the fliers. Commander Gagen has asked that if any members of our Town encounter or have additional information about the fliers, to please contact the 2nd District at 240-773-6700. Commander Gagen has also requested that additional patrols be provided throughout the entire area in order to calm the fears of residents.
Lastly, if you have encountered similar fliers and would prefer to communicate with the Town Council instead about what you have found, please email us at townoffice@townofchevychase.org about both what you have found and where you have found it.
We will continue to be in touch with you in the days ahead about this repulsive event. On behalf of all the Town Council, we thank you for your commitment to an open, diverse, and inclusive community, the kind of place in which we here in the Town of Chevy Chase are fortunate to live.
All the best,
Town Council
